Today, we’re shining a spotlight on one of our clients making a positive impact in the Latin community: El Mandado Supermarket. We had the opportunity to interview one of the owners and the daughter of the founders, Karla Brantner, who shared her insights on how their business has grown with ShapYa.
The story of El Mandado dates back to 1989 when Ana and Marco Roldan saw a need for Latin products in the Triangle, North Carolina. They started by selling tortillas, corn flour, and Mexican cheese out of their van, quickly expanding to meet growing demand. In 1994, they opened their first store, El Mandado, which later tripled in size and even added a restaurant—Taqueria El Mandado. Quick tip, if you visit, don’t miss out on ordering some snacks with chicharron!
Fast forward to today, El Mandado is more than just a Latin supermarket. It’s a community hub that offers groceries, money transfers, clothing, books, cell phones, party supplies, legal services, and much more. These unique items are imported from Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Africa—you won’t find them anywhere else. Visiting El Mandado feels like a journey through various cultures; it’s impossible not to feel like you’re in Latin America!
Committed to customer service excellence, El Mandado quickly became part of the ShapYa family. It was the first supermarket in North Carolina to implement ShapYa’s digital solutions, such as Dashboard, Online Ordering, White Label App, and ShapYa e-commerce. These tools captured the attention of its owners – Karla and Marco, who recognize that digitization is crucial in the current sales landscape. From ShapYa, we extend our sincere thanks to El Mandado; as our pioneering customer, they have been key to the evolution and continuous improvement of our services, enriching the product with their advice and contributions.

When the store first opened, one of our goals was to modernize it technologically. However, companies like Instacart aren’t interested in smaller businesses. After discussing ShapYa’s mission with my friend and COO of ShapYa, Gabriel Garcia, it became clear that this was the perfect opportunity for us to expand our online shopping reach.
Let’s talk about technology and digital tools. How has ShapYa impacted your day-to-day operations, especially your eCommerce efforts?
ShapYa has not only significantly boosted our online shopping but has also elevated our digital marketing efforts. ShapYa has been instrumental in helping us identify which products our community prefers, informing our inventory decisions.
Any advice for other businesses looking to go digital?
ShapYa’s digital tools have empowered our digital sales and streamlined our inventory management. I would highly recommend other companies take advantage of this app and its service packages.
